History of Omega

History of omega

There is hardly any name more recognizable than Omega among the Swiss watch manufacturers. Basically, Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet which represents the success and perfection in the attainment of a task. The forerunner of Omega was founded in 1848 at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, by 23-year-old Louis Brandt. Later, his sons Cesar and Louis joined the firm and in 1880, a year after its founder’s death, it was moved to Bienne.

By 1894, Omega developed a caliber for a pocket watch and named it as “Omega 19”. In 1903, both Brandt brothers, Louis and Cesar died, placing the future of Omega in the hands of four people, the oldest of whom, Paul-Emile Brandt, was at the age of 23.

The economic difficulties brought by the First World War would lead Omega to work with other firms. From 1925 onwards, Omega developed an association with the watchmaking firm of Tissot. This progress went till their merger in 1930 into a group called SSIH (Societe Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogere), Geneva. This merged group continued to grow and multiply.

During this period, Omega manufactured some of its most collectible Vintage Omega Watches which are famous even today. Omega Constellation watches, the Omega Seamaster Diver watches, Omega Seamaster “waterproof” sport watches, and the Omega Speedmaster watches were all developed during this period. It also made a name for itself providing pilots watches and military watches during Second World War.

The Omega brand’s reputation for quality and innovation has led to numerous awards over the 160-years history of the company. Since 1885, Omega watches have given the world various advanced timepieces  and their accuracy earned them the honor as the official timekeeper for the Olympic games.

Omega watches are famous for precision and durability, and celebrated for their unique, elegant yet sporty design. Endorsed by athletes, models, actors and actresses such as Nicole Kidman, George Clooney, Ian Thorpe, Cindy Crawford, Olympian Michel Phelps, and Michel Shumacher, Omega appeals to a number of people with its broad selection of style and functionality.
